April Showers Bring May Flowers printable craft for kids

This activity can be done as one big springtime scene or broken down into two separate crafts—it’s totally customizable. We’ve even included printable templates for the umbrella, raindrops, sun, and flowers to make it easy-peasy.

What You’ll Need

  • Scissors
  • Colorful printer paper (or white if you’re feeling classic)
  • 3 coffee filters
  • Washable markers or watercolor paints
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Craft glue
  • Printable templates: UmbrellaRaindropsSunFlowers

Getting Started

Start by printing the templates. You can use white paper, but if you’ve got a rainbow of colors available, save yourself the coloring step and print directly on colored paper.

Here are some color suggestions:

  • Umbrella: Purple (or any fun color)
  • Raindrops: Blue, of course!
  • Sun: Yellow or orange
  • Flowers: Any and all colors – have children mix and match

Crafting with Coffee Filters (the fun part!)

  1. Cut Apart
Take one coffee filter and cut it in half. One half will be for the umbrella, the other for the sun. Place both halves plus the remaining two filters on newspaper or paper towels to catch the color overflow.
  2. Color Like Crazy
For the sun, stick with warm tones – reds, oranges, and yellows. Rays or solid, your choice.
The umbrella is your chance to shine with patterns, polka dots, or even a rainbow.
Another full filter will be used for the flowers – color it with cheerful spring shades.
The last one is for raindrops – go blue or get creative with different shades and swirls.
  3. Spritz Away
Lightly spray each filter with water until the colors start to blend. Watch the colors mingle to create new shades! Then, set them aside to dry completely.

Putting it all Together

While the filters are drying, grab your scissors and start cutting out the printed templates. Most of the images can be easily cut apart if they are first folded in half. Follow the print-out directions for where to make the fold and what to cut out.

Once the filters are dry:

  1. Glue the cut-out templates onto their matching coffee filter backgrounds.
  2. Let everything dry, then trim away any extra coffee filter.

Display Ideas

With the theme of April Showers Bring May Flowers, have fun decorating your classroom windows. The solid cutouts from the raindrops and flowers can also be used as part of the decoration.
