Paper Plate Turkey

A fun way to incorporate measuring and fractions with this colorful Paper Plate Turkey. This time of year children are always anxious for the upcoming holidays. Why not use holiday themed crafts to make learning fun.

Pre-school children can be creative with this inexpensive paper plate turkey craft. Use vibrant colors for the feathers. For Older children, use this project to teach the fractions of 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8.

Supplies You Will Need

  • Any size white paper plate
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Orange Pipe cleaner (chenille stems)
  • Google eyes
  • Black marker
  • Paint – orange, red, yellow, black, brown (markers can also be used)

To create your paper plate turkey, start by dividing the paper plate into four equal sections. You may want to cut apart one paper plate for children to use as a template. Cut out one of the sections for the head.

Next, divide each the remaining three sections in half again with a thick black marker. This will create six equal sections for the feathers. Each section will represent 1/8th of the circle. Paint the turkey ‘feathers’ with paints or markers. I used fall colors in this example.

I chose to paint an orange beak and a brown crown for the turkey’s face. But creativity should be encouraged.

Form the pipe cleaner into 2 legs. Bend the ends of the wire to create the turkey toes. Attach the legs to the larger section of paper plate (feathers) with craft glue. Finally attach the head of the turkey to the front. Add google eyes and allow plenty of time to dry.
