A Ruth Bader Ginsburg Collar DIY project with instructions on how to recreate the famous Dissent Collar. Why not? In the year 2020 it seems like for the unexpected is becoming the new norm. A little more time at home, gives me a little more creativity on the blog front.

Please note that this is not a craft for the little ones. Though it wasn’t overly complicated, it should be doable for creative (and coordinated) 10 – 14 year old’s. For those looking to dress up as someone they admire – this is a perfect DIY.

If you are looking for a ready-made option for a Dissent Collar, be sure to check this dissent necklace and earrings set, black dissent t-shirt, or I Dissent face mask from Amazon.

I’m not a big fan of glitter as it seems to hang around for weeks after doing a project with it. One solution is to cover your work area with newspaper before you start. Once the project is finished, carefully roll up the paper and dispose of immediately.

Steps to Create the RBG Dissent Collar

I started with the printout of my version of the RBG Dissent Collar. Print this PDF out on white paper then cut it out of both white and black paper as shown. Since it is difficult to trace the pattern on to the black construction paper, I applied a drop of glue to the back of the white paper, attaching it to the construction paper to cut out the detail (see red X on image). After the scalloped edge is cut out, the two papers should no longer be held together with the glue.

Putting the black construction paper aside for a moment, the next step is to outline the rows (following the printout) with a thin layer of glue. I found the thin Elmer’s glue pen works well.

Note that both sides of the collar template should be the same, but when you do the cutting, it may vary a little bit.

Next, carefully lay the black construction paper on top of the white paper where the glue was applied. This should transfer the glue from the white to the black paper. Then add a thin layer of glue to the semi-circle neck edge of the construction paper.

Time to Add Some Bling

On your newspaper covered work surface, generously sprinkle your gold glitter over the areas where glue appears on the construction paper. This will need to completely dry before going on to the next step. I let it dry overnight, but a few hours will probably work as well.

Once dry, shake the excess glitter (whatever did not adhere to the glue) onto the newspaper. Move the collar to a clean workspace and add embellishments to the collar. In addition to gold and silver sequins, I also used some embellishments snipped from a roll of Diamond Wrap (purchased at the Dollar Tree).

Finally, add some black ribbon so that the collar can be worn over a black shirt or dress to complete the look. Hope you enjoy your Ruth Bader Ginsburg Collar DIY!
