Preschool children will love to create this cute Family Pumpkin Patch Craft. This is an easy introduction into the creative world of DIY stamp making. Everyday items can be used to create stamps for so many projects.
By cutting a carrot into several pieces, children can select the ‘stamp’ size for each member in their household. Children can see how the shape of a carrot tapers from a wider, larger top to almost a thin point at the end. The newest growth is the smallest part of the carrot, just as the youngest family member is the smallest. Include this craft with a lesson plan on Growing and Eating Carrots.
Use a cut carrot as a stamp for the pumpkins. When the carrot is cut into sections, there will be many different sized circles. Children will have fun selecting a size of ‘carrot stamp’ that would be the right size for each family member. Larger sizes for mom and dad, medium size for the children, small circle for the baby to create this Family Pumpkin Patch Craft.
What You Will Need
- Large carrot
- Green yarn
- Craft glue
- Orange paint
- Paper plate or plastic lid for the paint
- Scissors
- Knife (Adults only)
- Pumpkin Patch Printout
Creating the Pumpkin Patch
- ADULTS only: Use a sharp knife to slice the carrot into about 6 pieces. Make the surface of each cut as clean and flat as possible. Use one carrot per 1-2 children. Be sure to leave enough of the carrot for children to hold as a stamp (1-2″).
- Select the Pumpkin Patch Printout and print as many as needed. There are two pumpkin patch printouts per page. Cut apart in the center of the page.
- Cut a 6″ section of the green yarn for each child.
- Start the craft by having children apply a line of glue along the light gray line on the printout. Add the section of green yarn on top of the glue. NOTE: Instead of yarn, children can also trace the line with a green crayon or marker
- Add a small amount of orange paint to a paper plate or plastic lid.
- Have children select different sizes of cut carrot for their family members.
- Rub one end of the carrot into the orange paint then stamp it on to the printout, somewhat near the green vine.
- Once the paint has dried, the teacher or other adult can write in the family member’s names.
