How to make Coffee Filter Leaves

Colorful coffee filter leaves. Use washable markers to create the beautiful fall colors.
  1. First off, lay out newspaper on a clean surface to work on.
  2. Next, have the children use different colors of markers to color on an open coffee filter. They can create a simple picture or just color randomly.
  3. Once the coffee filter is colored in, a teacher or adult can spritz the filter with water or vinegar (or a combination of the two) until it is saturated and the colors are running together.
  4. Be sure to allow some time for the coffee filter to dry completely. You may want to do this at the end of the day and allow the coffee filters to dry overnight.
  5. Print out a copy of the Fall Leaf Template for each child. Try the new circle shape that will match the size of a standard coffee filter.
  6. Either cut of the 6 leaves from the paper and trace them onto the dry coffee filter, or place the coffee filter on top of the uncut leaf template and trace the leaves. You should be able to get all 6 leaves traced onto each coffee filter.
  7. Finally, cut out the leaves and use them for Fall decorations around the classroom or at home.

  1. This activity could be used in to create many different projects for kids. I think that all that would need to change would be the template for the shape. My daughter would love to make this project with some assistance. These could be strung across the room and she would absolutely love the colors. Seems to be an easy enough projects. Thanks for the idea utilizing simple materials that we already have. I’m thinking that we will do this for spring flowers next week – who needs sunshine to get flowers. Spring, here we come!
