Even as adults, many of us may not know the full history of the Pledge of Allegiance! It was first written in 1885 by a Union Army officer, Captain George Thatcher Balch. Seven years later in 1892 it was revised by Francis Bellamy to commemorate the 400th anniversary of America’s discovery. The pledge wasn’t officially recognized for another 50 years. In 1942, Congress formally adopted the Pledge of Allegiance.
Many government meetings begin with the Pledge of Allegiance. There was a time when the pledge was said every morning in all schools in the United States. That has changed over the years and now many states do not require reciting the pledge in public schools. Those states with the requirement can not discipline students not taking part in the morning pledge.
