TP Roll Scarecrow

Fall Fun for Preschool

The temperature is dropping as colorful Fall leaves cover the landscape. What better way to celebrate this festive season than with an easy Preschool TP Roll Scarecrow? The only item you might not already have in your crafting closet are some regular sized cupcake liners. Pick up a few at the dollar tree or ask parents to check their baking supplies.

Supplies for the TP Roll Scarecrow

  • Clean empty toilet paper roll (of course)
  • Paper hole reinforcers
  • Scraps of construction paper
  • Yarn
  • Black marker
  • Craft glue
  • Clear tape

Directions

Time to bring out the construction paper scraps you have been saving! The largest piece of paper needed is a 2 inch by 6 inch rectangle. This is a good way for children to practice using a ruler for measuring. Start by wrapping the section of construction paper around the TP roll at one end. I’ve found that the easiest way to attach the construction paper with on section of tape for the paper to the cardboard roll. Wrap the paper around the roll then use a second piece of tape to secure in place.

Cut up squares (or really any shape) for patches. Dont patches and scarecrows just seem to go together? The more colorful the better. Who wants a drab monochrome scarecrow? The purpose of scarecrows is to… scare away the crows. Farmers wouldn’t be dressing the scarecrow in their best blue jeans and flannel shirts, but rather old clothes with patches.

Attach the patches to the construction paper with a bit of craft glue. Use the black marker to create the stitching on the edge of the patch.

Add a Touch of Personality

Children can create a fun face for their scarecrow. Use the black marker for the mouth, a section of orange construction paper for a nose (attach with craft glue) and paper reinforcer circles for the eyes – filled in with black marker. Other options for the eyes could be google eyes or construction paper

For some straggly hair, clip a few pieces of yarn and attach to the top of the TP roll. While you have the yarn out, have children cut a 14 inch length of yarn to wrap around the waist of the scarecrow then tie in a bow.

For the scarecrow’s pointed hat, I found some cute cupcake liners with a flower pattern. But any type of regular sized cupcake liner will do. Only one half of the liner is need for each scarecrow. Have the children fold the liner in half and then cut apart on the folded line. Younger children may need a little help with this step.

Roll the halved liner so that the cut ends touch, then attach with a piece of tape. Finally, add a bit of craft glue along the top of the TP roll and attach the scarecrow’s hat.
