Three Crosses Craft for Kids

A powerful and beautiful image of the Three Crosses is a great classroom craft to make on Good Friday. Find out more on the religious meaning of the Three Crosses of Calvary. Use this craft as a sun catcher or as a wall decoration with the dramatic black silhouette of the three crosses against the morning sunrise.

Though not a difficult craft, the cut- out does require a little bit of skill and is designed more for Elementary aged children instead of preschoolers.
An easier option would be to simply cut the pieces apart as shown then glue in place on the colored coffee filter.

Easy Three Crosses Craft for Kids

For the Three Crosses Craft you will need:

  • White printer paper
  • Black construction paper
  • Washable markers
  • Coffee filter
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Three Crosses template – printed on white printer paper (terms & conditions)

Putting it Together:

  1. Start by printing out the Three Crosses template on the white printer paper.
  2. Fold the pattern in half, vertically so that the print is visible from the outside.
  3. Fold the black construction paper in half and insert inside the folded white paper.
  4. With the two folded papers together, white on the outside, black on the inside, cut along the lines of the image. For younger children, you may help them out by gluing the folded pages together along the edges of the paper, being careful not to glue within the circle image.
  5. Next, place the coffee filter on a work surface of newspaper or paper towels and decorate with the washable markers. The brighter the colors, the more beautiful the silhouette of the crosses will be.  Once colored, spritz with the water until the colors run together. Set aside and allow time to dry. For this example, the colors of green, red, blue and purple were used to create a sunrise.
  6. Once the coffee filter has dried, apply glue stick to one side of the black cutout of the Three Crosses and attach to the coffee filter
  7. Trim off any excess of the coffee filter that extends beyond the black circle.

Other Suggestions:

The white circle with three crosses is not used for this activity, but could be decorated with markers and used against a black background for a different version of the same craft.
