Poinsettia Flower Craft

An easy holiday craft for elementary aged kids to make. Due to the detailed cutting of the small flowers, this poinsettia flower craft might be too difficult as a pre-school craft. A cute gift for the teacher, make as many poinsettias as you like. These are attached to green bendable straws, but could also be used as pencil topper.
MATERIALS:
  • Craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Gold Mardi Gras beads
  • Red printer paper
  • Green construction paper
  • Green bendable straws
  • Mini rubber bands – 2 per flower
  • Poinsettia Flower Template
INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Print out the Poinsettia Flower Template on the red construction paper. This will print out 2 flowers.
  2. Cut the three sizes of flower bracts apart.
  3. Trace the largest flower on green construction paper and cut out.
  4. Wrap one of the mini rubber bands around the top of the straw, about 1/2 inch from the top.
  5. Add the poinsettia green leaves first then the flower bracts – largest to smallest. Alternate the pieces using the front then back so that the the flower bracts go in different directions.
  6. Once all the green and red cut out sections have been added (total of 4 per flower) wrap a second mini rubber band to the top of the straw and push towards the flower to hold it securely.
  7. Snip off any section of the straw after the rubber band.
  8. Place a bit of glue on one end of the gold Mardi Gras bead and place it on the end of the straw.
  9. Stand the flowers upright until the bead dries.
  10. Arange the bracts of the flower for a fuller affect and use the bendable part of the straw to angle the flowers in a small vase.
