A classic gift for kids to make for parents and grandparents this Christmas. For the above example, I found a great little puzzle at the Dollar Tree that contained 504 pieces. With this many pieces, it is possible to make 10 frames of this size. This puzzle had a forest background with a red barn – perfect colors for a Christmas wreath effect. To save a step, print the provided frame template on red card-stock paper, that way a nice matting is already in place for the photo. By making the frame larger than the photo, it gives a nice red border. For a little extra support, you can attach the frame to some light-weight cardboard.
If you need to paint puzzle pieces red and green, paint the back side of the puzzle piece. The flat, cardboard surface will be easier to paint than the front, slick side.
Cost for this craft is around .10 per frame. Other than the paper and glue costs, an inexpensive puzzle should run around $1 and can make approximately 10 frames.- Puzzle pieces – try to select a puzzle that contains lots of green pieces along with a few red pieces.
- Red and green paint – if needed
- Craft glue
- Child’s photo
- Scissors
- Printer paper or card-stock paper
- Lightweight cardboard – if needed
- Rectangle frame template
- Print out the Rectangle frame template or use your own shape for a frame. This frame template measures 4.25″ by 6.25″ with an opening size of 3″ x 5″. Whatever size frame you choose, the border should be around 3/4″ wide to allow enough space to glue the puzzle pieces.
- Do not cut out the center of the frame – just have the children use the lines as a guide for where to put the puzzle pieces. For the above example, I used red card-stock paper for the frame then attached a smaller photo inside the border.
- Place dots of glue around the border and attach the puzzle pieces. Pieces can be single layer of stacked for a more dimensional look.
Create a round frame to look like a Christmas wreath.
