Mexican Flag Craft for Cinco de Mayo

An easy Mexican Flag Craft for kids to put together. If you are looking for a craft to go with a Cinco de Mayo lesson plan, then this is it! All the supplies you will need to put the Mexican Flag together is the provided PDF, red and green paper, a popsicle stick and glue. The finished flag measures 4.5″ by 3″, not counting the flagpole.

The simplicity of the tricolor Mexican Flag makes this an easy craft to assemble. The flag consists of vertical sections of green, white and red which are the colors of the national army. In the center of the flag is the Mexican coat of arms which is based on the Aztec symbol for Mexico City.

The coat of arms is not repeated, but rather shown in reverse on the back of the Mexican Flag. This is due to a debate in 1984 on how the coat of arms should be depicted. Learn more about the origin and changes that have been made to the Flag of Mexico.

Putting the Mexican Flag Craft Together

Mexican Flag Craft

Start by selecting and printing the Mexican Flag PDF on plain white printer paper. Two flags will print per page.

Each flag will need a 3″ square of green and red paper. For best results, use light weight red and green printer paper. Construction paper can also be used, though it is a little thicker and harder to work with. This is a good opportunity for children to pull out their rulers to measure and cut out the 3″ squares of paper for the flag.

Cut out the Mexican Flags from the provided printout and fold where indicated. Next, insert the popsicle stick within the fold. Use either a glue stick or craft glue to attach 1″ of the popsicle stick inside the fold. Also, use a glue stick to attach the front and back sections of the flag together.

Fold the green square of paper and glue to the front and back of the flag at the fold as shown. Do the same with the red paper, but the fold will be over the right side of the front of the flag.
