Yarn Weather Monitor – No Apps Needed

I pulled this yarn weather monitor idea out of my holiday keepsake box from when I was young.  It is still a cute, fun craft for kids.  Sometimes the ones that have been around for generations that are a simple kind of humor will bring back fond memories of a life long before cell phones and weather apps.   The silly printable saying pretty much points out the obvious 🙂 but that’s what makes this fun.  Teach children how to braid with the three colors of yarn.  They will find it addictive and want to make one for grandma, grandpa, aunts and uncles.  Print out as many cards as needed – three will print per page.

What’s Needed for the Weather Monitor

  • PDF for the Printable Weather Monitor Card. Note: Three cards will print per page.
  • Printer paper is good, but thicker, card stock white paper works the best
  • Three different colors of yarn. I used red, green and white for this craft
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch

Start by printing out the PDF for Printable Weather Monitor Card. Three cards will print per page. Next, cut the cards apart and punch a hole in the top left corner of each card you will be using.

You can make the yarn braid any size you wish for this craft. For this example, I used 15 pieces for yarn for each of the three colors. The yarn pieces were 30″ long and created an 8″ braid. Lay out the cut yarn with the 3 colors grouped together. With a 6″ piece of yarn, tie the pieces together in the center. Fold the two sides together, grouping the colors into 3 sections then start the braid.

Once the yarn is braided, tie off the loose end with another piece of yarn. Use the 6″ piece of yarn from the folded end and tie it to the card.

There you have it, your very own Yarn Weather Monitor. Enjoy!

This page has been so well liked, that I decided to create a Yarn Weather Monitor tag in blue and white for a more winter appeal.
