Picnic Theme Party

Perfect outdoor party theme for spring and summer months.  For a special twist - bring it indoors during cooler months.

     Invitations & Printouts
  • Bug Invitations - free on-line invitations that are easy to use.
  • General Invitations - Use one of the general theme invitations, or the plain invitation and punch holes where indicated, tie with a red & white check ribbon.  Print a sheet of ants, cut apart and include several in each envelope!
  • Bug Thank You cards
     Food, Drink & Dessert
  • Chicken Nuggets - a healthy homemade alternative.
  • Individual juice bags/boxes - easy to store and serve.
  • Individual bags of chips - be sure to have enough of each type.
  • Kite Cake from Better Homes & Gardens and Crayola Kids magazines.
  • Cupcakes - individual cupcakes always work well for outside parties.  Allow the children to frost their own cupcakes, then apply sprinkles.  Top with a plastic ant.
     Decorations
  • Picnic basket and a large blanket
  • Let the beautiful outdoors be your decoration.  A local park or your own backyard will work here.  Just have a backup rain plan.  Bring the picnic indoors if the weather doesn't cooperate.
     Activities
  • Movies - A Bug's Life or Antz.
  • Find the Ants - print several sheets of ants, cut apart and hide.  Works best in a small area, or inside.  Use tape to stick the ants everywhere! on a tree, on the wall ...  See who can find the most.
  • Play-dough creations - make some silly insects using play-dough and toothpicks.
  • Nature hike.  Cut masking tape into 7" strips, and attach to each child's wrist, sticky side out.  As the children find pretty leaves, sticks or flowers, they can attach them to their nature bracelet. Children can use the scavenger hunt printout to estimate the size of the items they find. (prints 2 per page)
  • Bug Catcher - make a simple and inexpensive bug catcher from a little netting and 2 plastic cups.
  • Decorate a plastic sun visor using puff paints.
     Goodie Bags
  • Cut a 12" by 12" square of check fabric (cut with pinking shears) place the treats in the center of the fabric, bring up the four corners, and tie with a ribbon
  • Bug shaped fruit snacks, gummy worms (or other bugs), sunglasses, visor
